Residential Energy Saving Tips:

Just by making a few simple low cost/no cost changes to your daily routine can add up to very substantial savings on your energy bill this summer.
  • Close blinds or shades on sunny windows.
  • Open windows to take full advantage of the natural ventilation when it is permissible especially during cool mornings or evening hours.
  • Keep doors closed when it is hotter outside than it is inside your home.
  • Open doors when temperatures cool down in evening or morning hours.
  • Turn off lights and home electronics when not in use to reduce waste heat. You will be amazed at how much waste heat is produce by TV’s, cable/satellite boxes & cell phone chargers. Try it and unplug these items to eliminate electric consumption when not in use.
  • Shift high energy tasks such as dish washing and laundry to times that are off peak energy demand hours. Best times are when waste heat are not as intense such as mornings & nights.
  • Use Ceiling fans to help cool your home without largely impacting electrical use. Fans dramatically improve air flow and create breezes.
  • Replace incandescent light bulbs in your home with compact fluorescent bulbs which reduce heat, most use 66% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than conventional incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs give off 90% heat with only 10% light.
  • Insulate your home especially the attic. This is the best way to get the best benefit from insulation by keeping outside heat from getting in and cool air from your home from escaping.
  • Replace your old air conditioning system with one that is ENERGY STAR compliant to benefit from a system that uses up to 25% less energy than standard new model and up to 40% less energy than a model more than 10 or 15 years old.
  • Check the filter “Clean it or Replace it”. A clogged or dirty filter will decrease energy efficiency and over working your system leading to failures. A good rule of thumb is to check them every month.
  • Use a programmable thermostat which allows homeowners to automatically adjust the temperature based on their schedules. You can save up to 3% on utility costs for each degree you turn up the setting from 72 degrees.
